Who should get a Bone Density test?

Anyone over age 50 is eligible for a baseline bone mineral density test.
Patients less than 50 years old, may also be eligible for a bone density test if they have one or more of the following risk factors. Risks factors include:

  • Smoking and drinking excessive alcohol
  • People taking steroid-like medications
  • Postmenopausal women
  • People who have lost height (shrinking)
  • Anyone who has received an organ or bone marrow transplant

Testing for Adults Under Age 50

Testing may be recommended for younger adults if they have conditions linked to bone loss, such as:

  • Previous fragility fractures
  • Long-term use of high-risk medications (e.g., steroids, hormone therapies)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or other chronic inflammatory diseases
  • Hormonal or endocrine disorders (e.g., thyroid, parathyroid)
  • Malabsorption conditions (problems absorbing nutrients)
  • Low hormone levels or early menopause (before age 45)
  • Other conditions causing rapid bone loss

Why a Bone Density Test Is Important?

Bone loss can develop silently over time without noticeable symptoms. A Bone Density Test scan helps determine your risk of fractures and provides important information about your bone health.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you:
  • Are over age 50
  • Are post-menopausal
  • Have a family history of osteoporosis
  • Have experienced unexpected bone fractures
  • Take medications that may weaken bones
  • Have medical conditions affecting bone strength

Early detection helps protect your health and maintain mobility as you age.

What Happens During a Bone Density Test?

A Bone Density test is:

  • Quick – usually takes about 10–15 minutes
  • Painless – no injections or discomfort
  • Safe – uses a very low dose of X-ray radiation

During the scan, you will lie comfortably on an examination table while the scanner measures bone density in key areas such as the hip and lower spine.

There is no recovery time, and you can return to normal activities immediately after your appointment.
